Controlling Acidosis in the Equine Hindgut

چکیده

When cereal grain is fed to horses there is a risk of laminitis and it is also common to fmd behavioural changes characterised by chewing wood, eating bedding and grasping (wind sucking). This paper discusses the link between acidity in the gut, as a result of grain feeding, and the risk of laminitis and adverse behaviour. A proportion of the starch consumed as cereal grain passes undigested to the caecum and colon where it is rapidly fermented. The process of fermentation can lead to very low pH which is characterised by the presence of lactic acid. The feed additive virginiamycin (as the granular formulation FounderguardTM) is effective in controlling the pattern of acid build up and accumulation of lactic acid even in horses given high levels of grain. The control of acidic conditions in the hindgut reduces the risk of laminitis associated with grain-based diets and prevents some of the behavioural changes associated with feeding grain supplements to horses.

Feeding Protected Sodium Bicarbonate Attenuates Hindgut Acidosis in Horses Fed a High-Grain Ration

Hindgut acidosis (HGA) is a common problem in horses consuming either large quantities of grain or fructan-rich forages. Horses suffering from HGA may develop anorexia, colic, or laminitis or display stereotypical behaviors such as wood chewing and stall weaving. Feeding a protected sodium bicarbonate (PSB) is a safe and effective method of attenuating HGA without producing a metabolic alkalosi...

Behavioural changes in stabled horses given nontherapeutic levels of virginiamycin.

Abnormal behaviour commonly develops in intensively managed horses. A possible cause is the change in diet occurring when the horse is stabled. An experiment was performed to examine this possibility by manipulating the diet with the feed supplement virginiamycin, as Founderguard. During 4 weeks, 18 horses were fed diets ranging from hay alone to concentrate plus hay in the ratio of 3:1. The ra...

Ruminant Nutrition Symposium: Productivity, digestion, and health responses to hindgut acidosis in ruminants.

Microbial fermentation of carbohydrates in the hindgut of dairy cattle is responsible for 5 to 10% of total-tract carbohydrate digestion. When dietary, animal, or environmental factors contribute to abnormal, excessive flow of fermentable carbohydrates from the small intestine, hindgut acidosis can occur. Hindgut acidosis is characterized by increased rates of production of short-chain fatty ac...

Equine Laminitis: A Revised Pathophysiology

Vasodilation precedes the development of carbohydrate overload laminitis. Circulating laminitis trigger factors activate lamellar enzymes, which lyse the attachments between the distal phalanx and the inner hoof wall. The clinical signs of laminitis occur when the lamellar architecture disintegrates. The amount of pain correlates with the extent of lamellar pathology. A substance produced by St...

The Genome of the Predominant Equine Lactobacillus Species, Lactobacillus equi, Is Reflective of Its Lifestyle Adaptations to an Herbivorous Host

We report the draft genome sequence of Lactobacillus equi strain DPC6820, isolated from equine feces. L. equi is a predominant Lactobacillus species in the horse hindgut microbiota. An examination of the genome identified genes and enzymes highlighting L. equi adaptations to the herbivorous gastrointestinal tract of the horse, including fructan hydrolases. This genome sequence may help us furth...
